A former hotshot firefighter, Cohen sees climate change and human folly combining to create ever-more dangerous wildfire conditions. Cohen’s grim diagnosis started just inside the front yard of the Yusi property, where he pointed out a 10-inch-wide gravel strip between the home and the garden. He crouched, pushed his hand between green plant leaves and grabbed a handful of dead and dying vegetation layered beneath — kindling that could feed a fire.
